General Sports Turf Maintenance (Cricket – Spring and Autumn)

These two 1-day Courses (Spring & Summer Preparation and Maintenance/ Autumn & Winter Renovation and Maintenance) are designed to provide a basic knowledge of cricket ground turf management. They have been developed with the volunteer or part-time groundsman in mind but would equally benefit a person just entering the profession.

The courses enable the Groundsman to grasp the basic needs of a Cricket Ground throughout a 12 month period.

Delegates attending the courses and using the accompanying manuals (a copy of which is included in the course fee) will be able to develop their own skills, working knowledge and expertise, by understanding the method of instruction and the maintenance principles it sets out.

Within the course manual there are working diaries showing the range of tasks needed to be accomplished each month.

Of all the sports, a cricket groundsman has the greatest effect on how a match can develop so a basic knowledge of the game is essential.

It is, therefore, equally essential that Groundsmen fully appreciate their responsibility in producing a safe and consistent surface. This will only be achieved by having the knowledge and expertise found in the science of turf care.

Delegates will learn how:

  • To consider and provide safe working practice when completing all tasks and operations on a Cricket Ground under current legislation.
  • To understand and appreciate the general requirements of a Cricket Ground.
  • To be able to provide playing surfaces to the required standard of play.
  • To carry out all maintenance operations in the correct sequence ensuring the best surface.
  • To understand the difference between materials and products available for the maintenance and renovation of the Cricket Ground.
  • To understand the difference between the range of machinery available for the maintenance and renovation of the Cricket Ground.
  • To have an understanding and be able to carry out basic maintenance to all machinery and tools.

Skills covered include:

Mowing, scarification, aeration, fertilizer application, watering, rolling, renovations etc.
